What people are saying

Inclusion begins with understanding, and these resources provide practical tools to help schools on their journey to support every learner effectively.

Education Specialist - SEND & Wellbeing

The sooner we can identify what additional support a student needs, the sooner they are able to start making the level of progress they are truly capable of.

“Too many people are not identified as having special educational needs until after they have left school, but GL Education’s identification tools can help to ensure more children get the support they deserve as early as possible.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What dyslexia skills/subtests are assessed?

  • Ability Subtests (Non-verbal reasoning, verbal comprehension)
  • Diagnostic Subtests (Phonological processing, perceptual speed)
  • Attainment Subtests (Comprehension, word recognition)

Does the Screener diagnose dyslexia?

Dyslexia can only be diagnosed by an Educational Psychologist or an appropriately qualified dyslexia assessor.

The Dyslexia Screener offers an initial screener to see how far a student’s abilities and skills match those of people who have been found to have dyslexia. Further assessments, which focus on specific skills, such as spelling, and the processing of speech sounds, are recommended to determine whether intervention is necessary.

How can I support students whose reports indicate specific challenges?

This will be different from student to student, depending on their results. In some instances, you may wish to make adaptations to universal provision and in others you might need to complete further investigations.

The Dyslexia Guidance Handbook (available to purchase separately) gives you practical advice on supporting students, from early years to higher education. It has specific teaching strategies and activities that have proven effective in helping students achieve their potential. It also includes additional information to support staff with understanding dyslexia.

What dyscalculia skills are assessed?

  • Reaction time (Simple reaction time, capacity, dot enumeration, numerical stroop)
  • Achievement (Arithmetic achievement – addition, multiplication for students aged 10+ years).

When would I use Dyscalculia Screener?

Dyscalculia Screener can be used at any time to screen small groups or individual students.

Indications that a student may be experiencing barriers as a consequence of a specific difficulty with number include:

  • difficulty in basic number tasks, such as counting backwards or remembering ‘number facts’.
  • difficulty with processing or working memory, such as a slow performance with calculations or challenges with multi-step problems.

If a mathematics assessment such as the Progress Test in Maths has already been used, a poor mental maths score in comparison to the overall score may indicate a barrier to learning.
